Every grow tent listing says much the same thing: “600D oxford, highly reflective mylar interior”. Tent manufacturers and importers who want to source that material by the roll quickly find that it has no single name. It is sold as mylar grow tent fabric, 600D reflective fabric, diamond mylar fabric, oxford mylar laminate and, in the converting trade, as a reflective woven laminate. This guide explains what the roll actually is and how to describe it so a supplier quotes the right thing.
What the material is
A grow tent wall is one laminated roll material, not two fabrics sewn together. From the inside of the tent outward:
- Reflective face: metallised PET film, usually embossed with a diamond, grid, weave or satin pattern so that light is scattered rather than mirrored.
- Adhesive: bonds the film to the carrier.
- Woven carrier: polyester oxford scrim, named by yarn denier: 210D, 600D, occasionally 1680D.
- Outer face: a black or dark coating or film, which blocks light and gives the tent its outside colour.
The roll is supplied at full width and slit to the width a tent maker’s cutting table needs. Our page on reflective laminate constructions layer by layer shows the general structure; the catalogue entries for our reflective woven laminates show the faces and patterns we make.
What the names mean
| Name | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| 210D, 600D, 1680D | The denier of the woven carrier yarn. Heavier denier means a thicker, stiffer, more tear-resistant scrim. See 210D vs 600D. |
| Diamond mylar, grid mylar | The emboss pattern on the reflective face. Pattern changes how light is spread and how well the face hides creases; see diamond vs grid. |
| Oxford | The weave of the carrier: a plain basket weave common in polyester fabrics. |
| Mylar | Used loosely for any polyester film; here it means the metallised PET face. |
| Blackout, light-proof | The claim that the outer face blocks light. Opacity depends on the outer coating, not the reflective face. |
Reflectivity percentages quoted on retail tent listings (95%, 97%, 98%) are marketing figures for finished tents. For a roll material, ask for the measured value on the quoted construction, or test a sample yourself; do not transfer a figure from a different product.
How tent makers specify the roll
A quotation for grow tent fabric needs:
- Reflective face: pattern (diamond, grid, fine weave, satin), colour (silver, white, silver-grey), and whether a second reflective face is needed.
- Carrier: 210D or 600D oxford, and the weave if you have a preference.
- Outer face: black or another colour; whether it must be light-proof.
- Finished weight: in g/m² if you have a target. Measure your current material rather than guessing; our GSM calculator does the arithmetic from a cut sample.
- Roll format: slit width, roll length, core diameter. Widths that nest into your panel sizes avoid waste; see slit width and roll format.
- Fire or other test requirements: name the standard and the market. Documents are issued for a specific construction, so ask whether a report exists for the one quoted.
Supply scope
We make reflective woven laminates as roll goods in our Shenzhen factory and supply them to grow tent, greenhouse and grow room manufacturers. We do not sew or cut tents. If you have a swatch of the fabric you use now, send it with the enquiry: faces, pattern and carrier are confirmed from the sample, and the quotation names the exact construction, slit width and roll format.
